At Kimberly’s Piano Room, we believe it is important for students to build a love and appreciation for music, to be excited and curious about learning, and have the freedom to express their own creativity.

In our studio, we do fun challenges throughout the year, including:

  • Practice competitions, where students compete in teams and complete challenges to earn prizes.
  • A term where we focus on composers, learning about their lives, listening to their music, and coming to a better understanding of different musical periods.
  • Challenges for students to compose their own small pieces of music, occasionally even putting them all together in a book for other students to play.
  • Learning about chords to be able to use them in improvisation, composition, and accompanying themselves while singing their favourite songs.
  • Completing a wide variety of scales and arpeggios, giving students a comprehensive grasp of music theory and the ability to play more complicated music.

We use a fun, modern music curriculum, as well as music from the Trinity exam syllabus for those keen on exams, other classical tunes, special requests for music that students particularly love, duets with us and other students when possible, and Christmas music during the last couple of months of the year.

Some students are just there to gain some experience with music and learn to play recognisable tunes for their own enjoyment, others are keen to push themselves, sit exams, and pursue a career in music, and some are interested in writing their own music. We recognise that all students have different needs and cater to all personalities and goals.

We also believe that it is important for students to share their music with others, and provide them with that opportunity at our end-of-year recital where they get to play on one of the best pianos in Blenheim. We are involved with TEMPO (Today’s Emerging Musicians Performing Onstage) and we encourage those interested to perform at their regular concerts.

These methods have had great results in our studio. Our students look forward to their piano lessons, and are spurred on by the results that they see when they put in the work. The students who have entered exams have come away with great marks, including many Distinctions. Sophie, one of Kimberly’s first students, is now a teacher herself. Another student is writing her own songs. We’ve had students who start out being terrified of performing in public learning to face their fears and successfully playing in front of a crowd. Others have been asked to perform at family weddings. Even students who decide not to pursue music after a couple of years of lessons still leave with a good foundational understanding of music reading which means they will be able to pick up simple pieces and continue to play for fun at home.

At Kimberly’s Piano Room, we offer an all-inclusive yearly membership, with a flat monthly fee to keep things simple. Included are weekly private lessons and buddy lessons, group lessons a few times a year, performance opportunities, studio-wide themes and challenges, and all necessary books and materials provided.

The Studio Spaces

Kimberly’s teaching space is located at her home beside the riverbank in Springlands. It has its own separate entrance, part of the garage has been turned into a waiting room, and it also has its own separate toilet.

Sophie’s teaching space is located in Redwoodtown in a self-contained sleepout. It has a room for the piano, as well as a waiting room, bathroom, and kitchenette where waiting parents are welcome to make a cup of tea.
