Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve designed our programme this way because we passionately believe in the benefits of our unique set-up. Private lessons are fantastic for building skills one-on-one, but some of the most important parts of being a musician (such as in-depth music theory, performance, listening skills, and creativity) are often too big to cover sufficiently during a half-hour private lesson. Labs also add an element of fun and community that helps students stay motivated long-term. By making them part of our core programme, we can ensure that every one of our students receives a balanced, well-rounded musical education. If this isn’t something you’re interested in, we’re happy to recommend other local teachers who might be a better fit for your family.

Consistent practice at home is vital for ensuring progress. Younger beginners may only need 10–15 minutes most days, while older or more advanced students may need 30–45 minutes. We’ll equip students with practice strategies and clear goals to make their practice time efficient and enjoyable. The Vivid Practice app also makes it easy to track progress and stay motivated.

A reliable home instrument makes a big difference. Digital pianos can be a great option, as long as they are full-sized (85-88 keys), have weighted keys, a sustain pedal, a solid stand, and a music rest. This allows students to develop proper technique and finger strength. Acoustic pianos are lovely too, as long as they are in good condition and tuned regularly.

It’s true – our fees are a bit higher than other options, and we completely understand that it might be a barrier for some. However, we firmly believe our programme is worth the slightly higher price tag. You’re not just paying for lesson time; you’re investing in a complete, research-based programme designed for lasting progress, creativity, and confidence.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s covered by our monthly membership fees:

  • Lesson time and teacher expertise: Between 60 and 105 minutes per week (depending on your package) with a teacher who specialises in piano, has many years of both playing and teaching experience, has completed at least Trinity Grade 8 in piano performance, and either has or is working towards higher-level diplomas in both music teaching and performance. We believe it’s important for our teachers to have experience, recognised qualifications, and ongoing professional development so parents can trust us fully with their children’s musical education.

  • All materials included: All music and extra resources are supplied by us — no extra fees (apart from optional exam or competition entries) and no need for parents to source specific books. We even provide a lovely branded music bag for every student, plus end-of-year gifts and motivating prizes throughout the year. Access to the Vivid Practice app is also included, bringing lesson notes and practice tracking into the 21st century (no more lost notebooks!)

  • Performance opportunities: Multiple performance events throughout the year, including our annual recital on one of the finest pianos in Blenheim (and probably the one with the most interesting history!) with no extra fees for participants or audience members. We also organise regular Rest Home Concerts as a way of giving back to the community.

  • Behind-the-scenes work: All the admin, planning, professional development, and studio expenses that go into running a high-quality music programme. Many part-time teachers don’t account for these, but while we love what we do, we also need to sustain our business and support ourselves.

When families compare the value, expertise, and breadth of opportunities their child receives with us, we hope they’ll see that our fees reflect a genuine investment in quality – not just lessons, but a complete musical journey that nurtures skill, confidence, and joy.

At Kimberly’s Piano Room, we’ve left behind the old methods of “play it again until it’s perfect” approach (as well as the dreaded ruler ready to rap students over the knuckles when they make mistakes!). Our programme is shaped by current research into how children learn best, and we believe students shouldn’t have to dread their lessons each week, but should feel safe, supported, and inspired as they grow both both as a musician and as a person.

Here are a few key ideas that guide how we teach:

  • Practice Skills Matter: Children make faster, longer-lasting progress when they’re taught how to practice. We give students clear, problem-solving tools they can use both in their music and beyond!
  • Learning Through Play: Studies show that interactive, game-based learning helps concepts stick far better than rote drills. That’s why our Musicianship Labs use playful, hands-on activities to teach theory, rhythm, and creativity.
  • Community Builds Confidence: Students are most motivated when they belong to something bigger than themselves. Making music alongside friends helps build perseverance and joy.
  • Performance Fuels Growth: Supportive performance experiences teach poise and resilience, with the outcome being that our students learn to handle challenges with confidence.
Our goal is simple: for every student to love learning, understand what they’re doing, and feel proud of their progress.

We totally understand! Our labs are designed to be friendly, welcoming, and supportive. We tailor activities to each student’s current level, so they won’t have to worry about being “behind” others (or becoming bored if they’re ahead). We do our best to make sure every child feels comfortable and included, and since many activities are game-based, most children find themselves having fun before they even realise it!

Performance is always encouraged, but never forced. It’s one of the most powerful ways to build confidence, but we understand that it can feel scary at first. We take a step-by-step approach: first performing for just their teacher, then to a few peers during Musicianship Labs, then informally during our Rest Home Concerts, and finally working up to our annual studio recital. Nerves rarely go away completely, no matter how old you are (we still get nervous when performing too!), but most students find that the more they perform, the more confident they become, and the prouder they feel for facing their fears in order to bring the joy of music to those around them.

Parents are welcome to sit in the adjoining room with the door open if their child feels more secure that way, especially for the first few lessons. However, most students become more focused and independent without a parent listening in, so we encourage stepping back once they’re settled. For Musicianship Labs, we ask parents to wait in the car (or go get yourself a well-deserved coffee!) so students can engage freely with their peers. We’ll always keep you in the loop if anything needs your input.

Our programme is designed for children aged 7 and up, as that’s the age we find works best for the focus required in private lessons and the social, interactive nature of Musicianship Labs. If your child is younger, we recommend getting them involved in other general music and movement classes while they wait. You’re welcome to pop them onto our waitlist in the meantime, so when a space opens up once they’re old enough, they’ll be first in line!

We’re happy for students to have a trial lesson or a trial month before committing to the rest of the year. You’re welcome to get in touch with us for more details.
