Our Programme

At Kimberly’s Piano Room, learning piano is about so much more than just playing the right notes. Our all-inclusive programme combines private coaching, group learning, and performance opportunities to create students who are confident, creative musicians with a deep understanding of music – grounded in healthy technique, effective practice strategies, and the joy of performance.

Private Lessons

Private coaching is at the heart of what we do. These one-on-one lessons are personalised to each student, focusing on three pillars that form the foundation of musical growth:

  • Healthy Technique: teaching students to play with ease from day 1 builds a solid foundation to work from and avoids tension and performance-related injuries as students advance.
  • Smart Practice Skills: knowing not just what to practice, but how to practice effectively is a skill that will take students from good to exceptional, and benefits them in every area of learning.
  • Personal Goals: enjoying the music you’re playing is huge for motivation, so the repertoire we choose is based around what motivates each individual student.

Musicianship Labs

Alongside private lessons, every student in our studio joins a weekly 1-hour Musicianship Lab. These group sessions are where students have the opportunity to go in depth into the bigger picture of being a musician – skills that don’t always fit into one-on-one lessons.

Labs are interactive, collaborative, and fun! Students play music theory games together, perform for each other, create together; activities that not only make learning stick but also build a strong sense of community.

Focus areas rotate between:

  • Music theory
  • Aural skills
  • Composition
  • Music history
  • Performance workshops
  • Music appreciation

Performance Opportunities

Music is meant to be shared! We give students plenty of chances to grow their confidence in safe, supportive settings, such as:

  • Our annual studio recital, performed on one of Blenheim’s finest pianos, giving students the chance to showcase their artistry in a professional setting.
  • Termly concerts at rest homes – an exciting new addition to the programme that helps students bring joy to our wider community.
  • Performance workshops as a regular part of our Musicianship Labs.
  • The opportunity for motivated students to take part in TEMPO concerts, the Marlborough Performing Arts Competitions, and Trinity exams.

Termly Themes

To keep things fresh and motivating, we weave in studio-wide creative themes each term: practice competitions, composition projects, music history spotlights, and in-depth explorations of chords and scales. Students have the opportunity to push themselves to try something new, participate in a bit of healthy competition within the studio, and earn fun prizes for their efforts!

Who We Teach

We enjoy working with a wide variety of learners:

  • Children aged 7+ just beginning their musical journey
  • Hobby students learning for personal enjoyment
  • Exam-focused students wanting to progress through Trinity grades
  • Creative students who desire to compose their own music
  • Adult students, from complete beginners to those picking it up again, with flexible options suitable for busy schedules

Where We Teach

We’re delighted to offer lessons in two welcoming studio locations. Our Redwoodtown studio, located near Brayshaw Park, is where Sophie teaches and where our Musicianship Labs take place. Kimberly teaches from our Springlands studio by the river. Both studios are in peaceful neighbourhoods with plenty of on-street parking, comfortable waiting areas, and bathroom facilities for families.
